We hoped that artists would take this opportunity to critically grapple with the past and present to inform their work. The theme was intentionally broad to allow artists the freedom to convey their vision. We were looking for writing and visual artwork that speaks to these questions. How do you see communities thriving? How do we get there? What are your hopes for a more peaceful future? When you dream of liberation, what does that look like to you? In the year of our 50th Anniversary, the Peace Center sought visions of the future from young people in the community and asked: We must look inside ourselves and to our community to envision the future we want. We are more powerful together than anyone can imagine. We fear not only for the lives of those across the globe, but for ourselves, our families, and our loved ones. To make them understand life, the world and themselves more completely”Īcross the globe, marginalized communities continue to face direct threats to their humanity and livelihood. “The artist's role is to raise the consciousness of the people. I’m a sucker for sequences like this but sadly they seem wasted here as there is very little story to explain/showcase in Port Royale 3. The story and background detail is shown to you by oil pictures of key events replicating artwork of the time. But more of that later on, let’s look at the game as a whole first.Īfter a painful mandatory install you can set sail and begin your adventure a quick introduction into your desired path and you’re ready. Players can either take up the life of a trader and flit between the local towns and cities in order to earn huge piles of gold, or they can get the wind fully in their sails and head out to sea and take on the pirate menace. There will be some doubt surrounding the company as to whether or not they can supply this latest Port Royale title, Pirates & Adventurers, with some new features whilst sticking closely to the source material.Īs mentioned in the introduction, Port Royale 3 is a civilisation/strategy game set in a fictional 17 th century Caribbean that offers up two campaigns both boasting interesting ways for you to play. ![]() The first being Darkstar One: Broken Alliance for the 360, a space simulator, and Patrician on the PC, an economic simulator, so they have a decent grounding in the genre. Kalypso Media picked up many of the failing company’s assets including the above series and have now passed the baton of developing duties to Gaming Minds who have worked on two games previously. One such company was Ascaron Entertainment who created the Port Royale series on PC before sadly falling foul to insolvency. Many developers make a name for themselves with the PC crowd then take a brave step into the world of console development and suiting the game to a controller-based system. However, if done right, then there is a lucrative market for developers to plunder as long as they provide an entertaining package. Most of them fall foul of fiddly controls as they don’t translate well onto the controllers leaving the keyboard and mouse at the top of the class for this particular genre. ![]() We’ve seen a steady stream of civilisation and strategy games come to consoles over the past couple of years, all of which have seen differing degrees of success. ![]() To avoid this, you can equip spiked shoes on your characters before the battle, allowing them to retain footing. Any character that steps on the frozen ground will slip. For example, during one battle you fight against an ice dragon that constantly freezes the ground. When preparing for battle, you need to consider your group setup, your formation as you enter the battle, and even what equipment you bring with you. Very deep turn-based combat Winning battles in D:OS2 is equal amounts of preparation and tactics. ![]() Even if you don't want to create a campaign on your own, you can just download a campaign made by another user. ![]() There's enough creative freedom to create any campaign/story you want, keeping you interested in D:OS2 long after you've finished the main campaign. On top of that, the game master can control NPCs, add quests, and make rule adjustments on the fly. For example, you can designate one of the playable characters as a kleptomaniac, so whenever they're near an object that can be stolen, you'll have to roll a dice to determine if that character resists the urge to steal or not. Additionally, because there is a game master, you can create various role-playing events not possible in a normal campaign. You can even create new quests, levels, and alter any of the existing assets, allowing you to go as far as creating a sci-fi campaign if you have the patience. When creating a campaign, you can use any asset within the game, such as characters, items, etc, and import new, user-made assets as well. Outstanding multiplayer mode that allows for endless content D:OS2 features a Game Master mode, which lets you create custom multiplayer campaigns for up to 4 players, with the 5th player assuming the role of a Game Master. Everyone has such different worldviews and experiences, but they all manage to come together in ways that feel right for the story. They meet so many other personalities, like a sorrowful man who sleeps in a coffin as he mourns for his mistakes in life, and a dog-like creature from an endangered species who speaks intelligently. Their leader is Barret, the loud-mouthed and aggressive man with a machine gun grafted on his arm, who's actually a warm-hearted father who wants to do right by his young child and protect the planet. His childhood friend, Tifa, is much kinder and caring, encouraging him to change his ways and do what's right for the environment, even though she also has her own reasons for wanting him around. Cloud starts off aloof and uncaring, focused only on earning money from running missions with AVALANCHE, but he slowly begins to care about what the Shinra Corporation are doing to the planet. Diverse cast of characters from all walks of life The many different characters you meet are all wonderful in their own ways. ![]() On home consoles, where players are in it for the long-haul, it's much harder to justify the journey.
